Franchise systems do not remain strong simply because they were well established at one point. They remain strong if they continue to evolve: taking into account customer expectations, partners’ needs, staff, new technologies, data, AI, competitors and societal changes.
For us, continuous development does not mean chasing every trend. What matters is identifying relevant changes at an early stage and using them to formulate the right questions for the system: What is changing in the market? What are the expectations of new generations of customers, staff and partners? What role do digital channels, AI-powered search, social media, intuitive tools, mobile workflows and new learning formats play? And what skills does the system headquarters need in order not only to initiate change, but also to implement it effectively?
In franchising, innovation always involves change management. New processes, digital tools, data projects or AI applications do not automatically generate enthusiasm. They often give rise to uncertainty, resistance or concerns about extra work, loss of control or being overwhelmed. That is why further development requires clear leadership, early communication, involvement, pilot schemes, training, coaching and sufficient patience. People need to understand why a change is necessary, what exactly is changing and how they will be supported along the way.
Involving the network is particularly important. Partner advisory boards, specialist committees, pilot partners, working groups, ERFA formats and multipliers help to harness local expertise and develop better solutions. Involving partners and staff at an early stage not only yields valuable insights, but also boosts trust, acceptance and the speed of implementation.
Digital transformation also requires a clear process: identifying needs and potential, setting objectives and strategy, mobilising the network, implementing priority projects, and embedding the use of new tools and processes on a long-term basis. Quick wins, pilot projects and feedback loops help to make change tangible. Monitoring shows whether new solutions are actually being used and whether they are having the desired effect.
AI plays a key role in this regard. It can help to analyse data more quickly, make knowledge more accessible, understand customer and partner behaviour, personalise communication and make processes more efficient. At the same time, it is important to remember that AI is only as good as the data, processes, content and responsibilities behind it. Anyone who takes innovation seriously must therefore not only introduce new tools, but also further develop their own system architecture, culture and decision-making capabilities.
For us, this element means that a franchise system must remain capable of learning. Further development is achieved when head office and the network work together to understand, test, improve and embed changes. In this way, innovation does not result in a one-off initiative, but rather becomes an enduring capability of the system.
